Sci-comm panel at Brain & Mind
NeuWrite Nordic director Trevor Corson discussed journalism, storytelling, and creative writing about science as part of a panel discussion on science communication, during the concluding event of the Brain & Mind Symposium in Helsinki on October 25. The panel brought together a rich mix of perspectives from:
- eNeuro, the journal of the Society for Neuroscience—panelist: Mikko Airavaara, reviewing editor and professor of neuroscience at the University of Helsinki
- The Heureka Science Center—panelist: Heidi Rosenström, exhibition producer
- Communications at the University of Helsinki—panelist: Aino Pekkarinen, sci-comm specialist
The diversity of angles and expertise at the table allowed us to range from how to connect with young children to how to get the attention of senior scientists. Both of these challenges, actually, benefit from basic storytelling techniques, as we've discussed previously—see "Writing for kids makes us better science writers for adults". It was fun to see common themes emerge from different contexts and approaches.
